Fuerteventura, Canary Islands : Betancuria - Cathedral de Santa Maria
Unlike many of the interior villages, this one is particularly well geared up for tourists: the Cathedral de Santa Maria is a 17th century church re-built from Norman times, and unusually, has a number of altars. It sits in a pretty square, with palm trees to cool you down from the heat of the sun. Around it has sprung a host of opportunities to buy island souvenirs, eat a meal or have a cool drink. We spotted some very exclusive-looking restaurants, including a Michelin starred one around the square and plenty of others on the main road.
